Tips to avoid extra pounds this holiday season!

As the holiday season approaches, we are all concerned with keeping our health and fitness regimens and not gaining weight.  We know we are going to attend functions where there will be tempting foods, and we don’t want to deny ourselves seasonal tasty treats.

There is overwhelming evidence that frequent consumption of high glycemic foods, such as white bread, chips, pastries, grab and go bars, and other high sugar or fructose, high carb foods, are the hardest foods to burn. These foods suppress your feeling of feeling full, so you feel hungry more often. In addition, you will want to eliminate the bad fats, which do the same thing. All of these processed foods contribute to a slow metabolism.

Another way to boost your metabolism is to exercise using the method of high intensity interval training. Periodic fast-paced intervals raise your metabolic rate higher than a steady cardio workout can. A good rule of thumb is 30 seconds at a fast pace, then a 90 second cool down. Do this at least eight to ten times per day.

In addition, weight training is excellent for burning fat and boosting metabolism. Be sure to lift weights at least three times per week. Coffee and green tea are helpful in boosting metabolism, but they will not work alone if they are counter-acted with high glycemic foods.

And the final thing that boosts metabolism, and this may surprise you – is sleep! Getting enough sleep keeps your metabolism, and your whole body, able to process foods and nutrients more efficiently. Maintaining a healthy weight is much easier if you get a good night’s sleep.

You have to realize what you eat and how often dictates the speed of your metabolism. Eating nutrient dense foods give you a feeling that you are satisfied much longer, and eating whole foods will make you feel that you do not want or need to eat as often. It also helps to diminish food cravings, such as sweets.

The holidays are a time filled with many temptations but if you eat the right foods and exercise daily your metabolism increases over time. If you struggle with this, we can help.  Contact the team at Allure to help reach your goals.

Happy Holidays!
